Soil and Rock Mechanics Laboratory

The soil and rock mechanics laboratory at DTU is adequately equipped to carry out tests for soil and rock material classification, for the determination of soil/rock elastic properties, shear/compressive strength, permeability and compressibility and the estimation of electric and temperature effects.

The following lists contain the main tests that can take place in the laboratory:

Laboratory Tests on Soil

  • Soil classification
  • Oedometer tests – incremental loading
  • Direct simple shear tests (DSS) (static and cyclic)
  • Triaxial tests (static and cyclic, drained and undrained)
  • Soil permeability tests
  • Model tests on soil-structure interaction
  • Model tests in geo-centrifuge
  • High-low temperature tests

Laboratory Tests on Rock Cores

  • Rock classification, poroperm, BET and mercury injection
  • Index tests
  • Uniaxial compression test
  • Triaxial test (Hoek cells)
  • MTS Triaxial system
  • Sound velocity measurements
  • Electrical resistivity
  • Wettability and fluid distribution
  • Rock permeability
  • Water injection tests
  • Specially designed tests for rock cores, various pore fluids, etc.
  • High-temperature tests
